The Difference Between Sophocles Antigone And Jean Anouilh Antigone - Free Essay Example

Reading the two versions of the tragedy of Antigone, it was a really interesting experience. Just to see how different the characters are, to see a similar storyline but it is played out differently. This is a book you should really attempt to compare with the original Greek tragedy Antigone, by Sophocles and the Jean Anouilh version, (Which is the more modern one) about the whole plot of the story and characters. Both of the playwrights have the same storyline, about a girl named Antigone (the main character), who defies her uncle, Creon, who also happens to be the king of Thebes. The characters in the plays are generally constant between the two versions. Both of them also made sure Antigone be faced with the penalty of death to reflect the attitudes and the actions that unfold in the old days. Itrs almost like a remake but minor details being the only difference. I do think the most interesting difference is the change in the main character, Antigone; Antigone herself is the main production of these two plays. Sophocles is the play writer who is the person who is known for his style of a Greek tragic play. He puts in a flaw in just about every main character. He is the main person who is known for Greek styled plays. You see thing main thinking of Jean Anouilh, is that he takes Sophocles drama, grinds it down the very main idea of Antigone, and the next thing you know is that a new (but yet similar) story has appeared. Antigone motives and understanding of the situation are the same, though much of her characteristics do differ among the two plays. Her character can be understandable by reading the story since it is based on her. In the Jean Anouilh version, you see Antigoners real colors when she is brought upon Creon by the guards after she is caught trying to bury the rotting body of Polynecies. Barring the fact, that Antigones argument for burying Polynecies body is the same in both of the texts. Either way, her justification for burying Polynices is quite the same: She desires it to g o by her religious views by burying Polynices so that he can have a good afterlife. You also notice that in both plays, her original determination to bury Polynices body and her impulsiveness is the same. Looking back at the original Sophocles version, Antigone has a snappy comeback to everything that Creon throws at her. Looking back at the argument she had with Creon, Antigone just seems like she can just snap back at anyone who even dares defies or even talks to her in any way. In Jean Anouilh version of Antigone, she doesnt tend to snap back and is a lot lesser ruder of a person in that play. Though I am going to have to say she is just as stubborn as she is from the Sophocles version. Let me elaborate on how stubborn she can be in the Jean Anouilh version: Creon says, Did you tell anyone what you were going to do, then Antigone replies: No., Did you meet anyone on your way out? , Nobody., Are you sure? , Quite sure. (Jean Anouilh, pg.26), and this conversation between Creon and Antigone keeps going back and forth, and her attitude does not seem to change much throughout the play. Still, there are some similarities. Previously I have mentioned how stubborn, and how rude Antigone can be at times throughout the play; In Jean Anouilh version of Antigone, he depicts her as a solid, but yet a more nice Antigone. Sophocles version feels a lot more like a script, the characters in the play all knowing what to say, the modern Antigone play has more depth added to the characters. Both of the plays have their own kind of honor. While both of the plays are essentially the same, this, in turn, makes the comparison easy. The real difference is the elements both plays uses. Sophocles wrote his with an idea in mind. Each character has an idea and then dies with it. The new Antigone, in this case, does not carry just carry its idea but also travel to areas they have been set to be in. Both of the plays attract different people.

Essay on Level of Punishment Does Not Fit the Crime

It is insulting to the victims and families of victims of serious crimes that the justice system fails to make sure that criminals pay the price for the devastation that they cause. For example, Johannes Mehserl only served 2 years in prison for the killing of innocent member of public, Oscar Grant. At the same time, there are examples of 5 years prison sentences for the possession of marijuana. This is enormously unfair, as someone who can take the life of another human being should receive a far harsher punishment than someone whose crime only effects themselves. In today’s society, the level of punishment for crimes are decided and applied by the laws of every country. However, in recent years there has been an increasing sense that†¦show more content†¦How is this possible? How can it be fair that the justice system give a woman who was motivated by love to end her child’s suffering, twice the sentence that was given to a man who set out to harm innocent people? These cases demonstrate the inequality in the justice system that can be caused by judges having too much power to vary the sentences they give to people. If there were clearer guidelines on minimum and maximum sentencing, it would significantly help to address these miscarriages of justice. Although the public want to see criminals punished, the justice system today has been criticised for applying punishments which can seem excessive and sometimes ridiculous. For example, a pub landlord was jailed for six months and fined  £10,000 for allowing people to smoke in his 2 pubs when the smoking ban came in to force in 2008. With the cost of a place in the UK prison totalling to  £119,000, how can this be seen as good value for the tax payer? In addition to these costs, this approach to justice leads to the greater problem of prison over-crowding. A clear example of this problem can be seen when looking at United States of America. One adult American in every ten will go to prison (one in nine for young African American men). Free trade vs. Protectionism Essay Example For Students

Free trade vs. Protectionism Essay Free Trade vs. Protectionism One of the greatest international economic debates of all time has been the issue of free trade versus protectionism. Proponents of free trade believe in opening the global market, with as few restrictions on trade as possible. Proponents of protectionism believe in concentrating on the welfare of the domestic economy by limiting the open-market policy of the United States. However, what effects does this policy have for the international market and the other respective countries in this market? The question is not as complex as it may seem. Both sides have strong viewpoints representing their respective opinions, and even the population of the United States is divided when it comes to taking a stand in the issue. After examining all factors on the two conflicting sides, it is clear that protectionism, from the side of the United States, is the only way the American industrial economy can expand for the benefit of its citizens and for its national welfare. The economy needs to get itself out of the huge deficit hole that it has created for itself, and lean towards protectionist measures. The dictionary definition of free trade states it as a policy of allowing people of one country to buy and sell from other countries without restrictions. This idea originated with the influential British economist, philosopher, and author of The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith. He inspired the writings of great economists such as David Ricardo, Karl Marx, Thomas Malthus, and others. According to Smith, specialization and trade is the best solution to create a flourishing American economy, with its industries ruling the economic world. William H. Peterson, holder of the Lundy Chair of Business Philosophy at Campbell University, agrees with Smiths philosophy. He states that the idea of free trade allows the efficient use of economic resources and will promote international cooperation. One of the biggest examples of international cooperation is the Bretton Woods system that originated from a 1944 conference at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. Those participants in this conference created three organizations to help regulate the international economy. The first is the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which was established with the idea of regulating monetary policy. One of the benchmarks of the IMF is the stabilization of exchange rates and the loaning of money to help stabilize countries with balance of payments deficits. The second organization established was the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) whose main focus was on a liberal trading order. Their mission was to reduce trade barriers on manufactured goods and to build-up the principle of most-favored nation (MFN) status. This would impose a sense of fairness between countries in that each was required to levy the same low tariffs on each others imports. The third and final organization sponsored by Bretton Woods is the World Bank. The World Banks most ambitious aim was the fostering of economic development. This is accomplished through loans to struggling countries. In addition to the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation was annexed to provide loans to corporations who are seen to help aide in poor countries development. These three organizations within the Bretton Woods agreement captured the cooperation of the global community due to the one thing they all found in common: a commitment to a free market and economic freedom. In the 17th and 18th century, the American revolution was triggered by the Sugar Act of 1764 and the Stamp Act of 1765. The Sugar Act imposed import duties on foreign molasses, sugar, wine, and other commodities. The Stamp Act provided a tax on all important documents, periodicals, almanacs, pamphlets, and playing cards. The colonists believed that these control practices were unfounded since they advocated No taxation without Representation. .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c , .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .postImageUrl , .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c , .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:hover , .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:visited , .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:active { border:0!important; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:active , .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3afcac027bb9d711458972aeb8ec364c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Theodore Roosevelt Persuasive Essay These protectionist measures contributed to the conflict which led to the American revolution. Similarly, protectionism also led to the Civil War. During the Civil War era, the industrial North was goading the agricultural South through the highly disputed Tariff of Abominations of 1828 and 1832. This high tariff protected the northern manufactures while the South demanded a low tariff in order to trade its cotton for cheap foreign goods. Eventually, these conflicts led to issues of secession, which

Ineffective Methods of Dealing With Refugees

Question: Discuss about theIneffective Methods of Dealing With Refugees. Answer: Current Methods of Dealing with Refugees are Ineffective Introduction The thorny issue of refugees is a worldwide problem that has not been contained. War and natural disasters are the main culprits that force people out of their countries. It is unfortunate that some well-resourced countries are unwilling to relieve the refugee burden from the third world countries that have the lions share of the refugees. It is clear that the methods of dealing with refugees are ineffective. People who are seeking a safe place from their war-stricken countries are finding it impossible and are resulting in dangerous and illegal methods. This paper looks at Turkey and the Syrian refugees. Turkey has been the haven for Syrian refugees since the war broke out. This mass movement is contributed by the geographical distance of Turkey from Syria. The paper explores the methods being used to address the refugee crisis and why they are ineffective. The paper explores the advantages of having refugees and the disadvantages. Refugees are strenuous to a countrys resources, and they can also pose a security risk. A country can also use the same refugees to its advantage. The refugees can be used as sources of labor and to build relations between the country of origin and the hosting country. The lasting solution to the issue of refugees is solving the conflicts and ending the war, but this has failed. Current methods are ineffective and only push the refugees to the extremes. Human smuggling would be a thing of the past if proper measures were to be taken and asylum seeking made easier (Schuler,2014). Ineffective Methods The recent statistics show that the number of refugees from Syria to Turkey has hit 2.6 million (UNHRC.2015). The financial strain has been felt due to the fluctuating number of refugees. Resources in this country continue to decrease. The Syrian refugees continue to live in abject poverty due to unemployment. Despite the new policy on work permits for Syrian refugees, the plan is yet to be implemented. Syrians continue to work illegally with low wages and no protection from exploitation (International,2014). A talk held at TedGlobal by the refugee activist Antonio Geteres (2015) revealed that 90% of Syrian refugees in Turkey are living below the poverty line. It is a struggle for survival(Codell,2011). According to Antonio, refugees have the right to be protected. Resettlement of refugees is one of the greatest issues in Europe. Antonio Guteres(2015) attributes this to lack of solidarity among the European countries. Most countries are unwilling to take up their international responsibilities. They prefer to give donations rather than take in the refugees. This method is ineffective. The donations are temporary solutions to the problem. The countries should be focusing on how to provide settlement for refugees, build new hospitals and schools to accommodate the increasing number of the population. The European nations should be willing to shoulder the burden of the refugees in solidarity. As long as they continue to bury their heads in the sand, Turkey and other countries will continue to be overburdened. It is inhumane to dictate the number of people a country can take in (Wintour,2014). A country should make the necessary adjustments to accommodate more refugees (Antonio,2015). Effective Methods There are some methods of handling refugees that have been successful in Turkey. The 900- kilometer wall has helped to reduce illegal immigrants from Syria. Refugees are a threat to a countrys security is unregulated. This wall is heavily guarded, and any refugee has no access without screening and documentation. This step is a great measure to protect the citizens of Turkey from terrorism. Mercy McGrath of USAID told Reuters that Turkey has the best humanitarian response in the world. This act of kindness can make the country vulnerable to attacks. This wall that separates Syria and Turkey has gone a long way in protecting the countrys interests. The proper entries into the country are well guarded with the necessary screening equipment. Citizens can cohabit with the refugees without tension. There have been organized workshops to discuss the challenges faced by the refugees. An example is the Ankara workshop held in Turkey. Brainstorming and trying to come up with long-term solutions is a great way forward. Such forums generate ideas that result in significant progress. A forum like TEDGLOBAL brings together like-minded individuals who contribute to the worlds solutions. One such individual is social scientist Alexander Betts (2016).In his talk about how to fix refugee handling systems, Alexander talks about how treaties about refugees being collective responsibilities have been ignored. He goes further to condemn inhuman humanitarian responses like detaining child asylum seekers. An enabling environment will help these refugees to thrive and not just to survive.(Betts,2016). Solutions to the refugees crisis can be derived from forums like these with people who have an in-depth understanding of the refugees. Conclusion The refugee situation is not about to end. Great minds like Alexander and Antonio have pointed out the failure of the refugee handling system. They have gone further to give recommendations, but all these will only remain ideas if the stakeholders are unwilling to implement the rules and the treaties. It is no doubt that refugees are a burden. This, however, does not mean they cease to be human beings with rights (Guterres,2015). Countries are unwilling to issue refugees with visas, and they result to dangerous routes. Countries are unwilling to give refugees working permits, and as a result, they continue to live in deplorable conditions. Asylum seeking is almost impossible in most countries. The current methods of dealing with refugees are ineffective, and they will continue to be, until the problem of refugees become an international responsibility (Guterres,2014). Some countries are opening up and are willing to stretch their resources to accommodate the refugees. Turkey has been of great help to Syria and more policies are still being developed to accommodate the increasing number of Syrian refugees. There is still so much to be done. New methods should be adopted to ease the suffering of these refugees in the world(Zetter,2007). Resettlement should be a priority for all countries. The Merchant Of Venice - Anti-Semitism Essays - Shylock,

The Merchant of Venice - Anti-Semitism William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice contains many examples that insult Jews because they were the minority in London in Shakespeare's time. Although many parts of the play could be interpreted as offensive in modern times, Elizabethan audiences found them comical. The majority of London's population at the time was anti-Semitic because there were very few Jews living there. Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice supports anti-Semitism actions and thoughts and therefore proves that Shakespeare was an anti-Semite. In the second act, Launcelot is debating with himself whether or not he should seek a new employer. Launcelot's problem is that he works for Shylock, who is Jewish. Launcelot persuades himself that, ?Certainly the Jew [Shylock] is the very devil incarnation (2.2.24) Eventually, Launcelot convinces himself that he would much rather run away than be ruled by a Jew. Launcelot presents this argument to his father: ?I am a Jew if I serve the Jew any longer.? (2.2.104) Before Launcelot accepts a new job with Bassanio as his master, he is reminded that Bassanio is much poorer than Shylock. His reply to Bassanio was, ?You have the grace of / God, sir, and he [Shylock] hath enough.? (2.2.139-40) Lorenzo insults Shylock behind his back when he tells Jessica (Shylock's daughter) that if Shylock ever makes it to heaven, it is only because Jessica converted to Christianity. Lorenzo said, ?If e'er the Jew her father come to heaven, / It will be for his gentle daughter's sake (2.4.36-7) When Lorenzo says this, he is implying that Shylock's faith and his Jewish heritage is not strong enough to get him into heaven. Lorenzo says that if Shylock is saved, it is by his Jessica's sake, because she has chosen Christianity over Judaism. This statement implies that Lorenzo believes that Christianity is the religion that is powerful enough to admit one into heaven; therefore Lorenzo is biased against anyone that is not a Christian, such as Shylock the Jew. Later in the play Jessica is insulted by Launcelot. Launcelot believes that parents' sins are passed down to their children. He also believes that being Jewish is a sin. Launcelot frankly tells Jessica his opinion of her: ?For truly I think you are damned.? (3.5.5) He explains that she is damned by both her father and mother because she was born Jewish. Launcelot tells Jessica that her only hope is that, ?Your father got / you not--that you are not the Jew's daughter.? (3.5.9-10) When Jessica hears this, she defends herself by telling Launcelot, ?I shall be saved by my husband. He hath made / me a Christian.? (3.5.17-8) This conversation between Launcelot and Jessica supports that Shakespeare was anti-Semitic because it states that Jews can only be saved by becoming Christians. Throughout The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare uses examples of anti-Semitism. An Elizabethan audience would have perceived these situations as humorous because it was their reality. But to a Semite or a modern audience, this play may seem offensive and attacking. Launcelot decided to find a new master because he thought that being around Jews was dangerous to his health and mind. Lorenzo stated that the only way Shylock would get to heaven is by his gentle daughter (because she converted to Christianity). And Launcelot told Jessica that she was damned because she was born Jewish. The three discussed are only a few of the insulting situations that Shakespeare presents for Jews and modern audiences in The Merchant of Venice that prove that he was anti-Semitic.

Cultural diversity

Cultural diversity Introduction Islam is one of the major world religions believed to have its roots in the prophet Muhammad. He said to have received revelations from God through angel Gabriel. Islam has grown rapidly and the presence of those who profess this faith can be seen in many countries. The religion is known for its strict sharpie laws derived from their Holy Book, the Koran.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Cultural diversity specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These laws deal with all spheres of life and hence become the foundation of how the followers of this religion should live their daily lives. Issues about family relations, prayers, and other important issues touching on life are addressed in the Koran. The description of customary practices within the culture It is not possible to separate Islam as a religion and the way one who professes the faith lives because it has been said to be a way of life. This is because the religion stipulates the basics of how one should live from birth, throughout life and even the rites accompanying death. The following are examples of customary practices within the Islamic culture. The birth of a child is usually a happy occasion for the family and the child is considered a gift from God. There are laws governing the naming of a child depending on the sex of the child. A male child for example should be given a name that shows dedication to God or one of the messengers of God. Names of friends the founder of this religion, Prophet Muhammad may also be used. For a female child, the names of women who appear in the Holy Book or those of the Prophet’s family members may be used (Huda, 2011). Issues related to courtship and marriage is also addressed. Choosing a person to marry is taken as a very serious decision which requires a lot of prayer and to an extent the contribution of the family members. This is because the marriage is considered to be a very importa nt unit in the society. Marriage can therefore be possible only between two people professing this religion. Inter-faith marriages are not allowed but there is an exception. A Muslim man is at times allowed to marry a religious and devout Christian or a Jew but a Muslim woman is not. If any man wishes to marry a Muslim woman, he must first convert to the religion. A Muslim husband is supposed to supply all basic needs of the family. The importance of education is also emphasized. Education is normally seen as an important aspect in life everyone is entitled to. The parents therefore are left with the decision to educate their children to highest level possible because it is seen as a process that continues throughout life. It is common for a majority of Muslims to also learn Arabic. This is because Muslims find themselves using this language when it comes to prayer times and reading of Koran.Advertising Looking for essay on political culture? Let's see if we can help you! Ge t your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More There are also restrictions as to what is lawful to eat and drink and what is unlawful. The Muslims are allowed to eat and drink all things with the exceptions of what has been said to be unlawful by God. These include pork and alcohol. Dead animals are also prohibited. The mode of slaughter of an animal also determines whether a Muslim is allowed to eat that particular meat or not. This is because they believe in the invoking of God’s name in recognition of how sacred life is during slaughter and that they are only doing so because God has allowed them (Huda, 2011) Improper mode of dressing is totally prohibited especially among women. Being appropriately dressed is not optional but a requirement for both men and women. Women are supposed to cover their entire body. They are also not allowed to wear tight clothing which shows the shape of their body. Transparent clothes are also prohibited among the Muslims. Clothes also meant to draw a lot of attention for example very shiny ones are not allowed. One is generally supposed to be decent. The culture’s portrayal in the media and its effect The media has had a significant role to play concerning the portrayal of the Islamic culture. The picture the media paints of this culture is mostly a negative one. This is because it is portrayed as being a culture of terrorism and of people who are involved with activities that cause disturbance of peace. This has happened partly due to lack of enough information about Islam and partly due to lack of tolerance of this religion. This explains why many people have a negative opinion about this religion (Anser, 1995). Many people rely on the media for information about many things and especially concerning the events taking place in the world. When the media, therefore presents any kind of information about Islam to those who know little or nothing at all about the religion, it is considered to be the tru th. The report about Islam in the media has been predominantly that of people who are ready to fight and the concept of Jihad has more often been blown out of proportion (Anser, 1995). The truth, however, is that Muslims are not allowed to initiate war by attacking their rivals but are only allowed to fight for self-defense or when defending their religion. The issue of portraying Islam as a ‘fighting’ religion has therefore been there because of ignorance of those reporting for the different media houses. The Holy Book used by the Muslims, the Koran, promotes peaceful coexistence among people (Akel, n.d). Another area of misrepresentation of the Islamic culture is concerning the position and rights of women. The media depicts the women in this culture as oppressed and undermined and the men ruling over them with harsh rules and regulations. The religion has been considered to be male dominated due to the media’s incorrect reports.Advertising We will writ e a custom essay sample on Cultural diversity specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The truth however is that the existing laws in this culture concerning women are not oppressive and if correctly applied, they are designed to liberate women instead of enslaving them. Wearing modest clothes for example is to their advantage because it prevents the women from unnecessary attention from men which may results to rape cases. There has also been a challenge for the media reporters to differentiate between Islam as a religion and the political situation of most Islamic countries, in many cases what happens in these countries has been interpreted as being synonymous with what is acceptable in the religion. When there are cases of war and other bloody scenes in the countries with large Muslim populations, it is commonly seen as a religious act because this is the portrayal of the media (Akel, n.d). People in Islamic countries have also been portrayed as illiterate and the religion as being a hindrance to acquiring education. This is not true because the right to education is granted by the Koran. The choice therefore whether to get educated or not to lies solely in an individual. How to overcome misperceptions of other cultures by criminal justice professionals Misperceptions and stereotypes when interacting with other cultures are not uncommon. This problem can be solved through several ways especially among the criminal justice professionals. Since media is a powerful tool of conveying important information to the public, it can be used as a tool for correcting the misperceptions about diverse cultures and especially the Islamic culture. This is as a result of the leading role it has played in the misrepresentation of the same. Proper and accurate information about any given culture is important before any media house reports anything about the culture. This helps solve the problems of half truths or lies spread about a certain c ulture by the media due to ignorance or being biased towards a given culture as has happened with the Islamic culture (Esposito, 1992). There should be enough training and literature materials given to the criminal justice professionals to help them understand and also interpret to the public the difference between Islamic culture and political occurrences in Islamic states. This also helps solve the problem of viewing everyone professing this faith as a terrorist. Effective strategies for working and interacting with members of other cultures Since there are many cultural groups in then world, it is important for people to learn effective strategies for working and interacting with members of other cultures. One important strategy is to develop tolerance to other cultures. This helps one to bear with aspects of the other culture which may not be found in one’s culture. When this happens, peaceful coexistence is promoted.Advertising Looking for essay on political culture? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Another way is trying to understand the other cultures in depth to avoid half truths or complete lack of knowledge about the culture, this also helps someone to correct any prejudices and stereotypes held against a given culture due to ignorance. This way, people from different cultural groups are able to live harmoniously. Influential groups like the media can also help correct any false beliefs about a certain culture after they (the media) have had accurate information about the culture and report issues without being biased. This is because most people rely on the media for information and therefore any wrong information about a particular culture misleads a majority of people who may not have another way of accessing the truth (Esposito, 1992). Reflection on the personal impact of the assignment Through this assignment, I have realized how easy it is to be prejudiced against certain cultures we know little or nothing at all about. In the case of Islamic culture, I have learnt a lot about their customary laws and other misperceptions about the religion. The stereotypes concerning Islam have therefore been replaced by the truth of what actually Islam is about. The importance of valuing cultural diversity and seeing the beauty of these diversities has also been learnt. Those of other cultures should therefore, not be viewed as enemies to be destroyed but we should seek to understand them and try to promote harmonious coexistence. Conclusion Cultural diversity is present everywhere in the world and should not be used as an excuse for causing chaos in any part of the world. People should try to learn how to live peacefully with others despite their cultural and other diverse differences. It is only this way that incidents of cultural prejudices and stereotypes will reduce and more productivity be seen in places where there are many people of different cultures living together. This is especially important when dealing with the people of the Islamic faith which has been misrepresented. Reference List Akel, B. (n.d). Islam for today: Islam and the Western Media. Web. Advancement in technology has brought about globalization and thus many businesses have workers from different backgrounds.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Cultural diversity specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Hiring a culturally diverse workforce is important. A diverse workforce can be beneficial to a business although some difficulties may arise in managing it. A manager’s ability to manage the culturally diverse workforce is significant for an organization’s success. Advantages of cultural diversity Any kind of business requires people with diverse skills, knowledge and experiences. Employing people from diverse backgrounds can give a company the advantage of having a wider pool of skills and experiences. Different perspective Different people have different points of view. Having a culturally diverse workf orce can open up opportunities for a business as people from different cultures may bring in different perspectives that benefit the company. For example, an employee from a certain background can give ideas about products or services that may interest a certain community thus creating a business opportunity for the company. The diversity helps the company in innovation, flexibility, problem-solving creativity, and decision-making. Thus, a diverse workforce can help a company tap into unknown markets (Bhadury, Mighty Damar, 2000). Business opportunity A company finds opportunities to exploit in its line of business. A culturally diverse workforce can give a company an edge. People from different backgrounds bring in a wealth of different experiences and skills and so a company should benefit from its workforce by embracing cultural diversity. Besides, employing people from different backgrounds gives a company a wider pool from which to choose their employees. For example, IBM incr eased its revenue between 1998 and 2001 by embracing cultural diversity and making partnerships with diverse vendors (Thomas 2004).Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? The manager must be wiling to be flexible and understand the cultural differences among his or her team. Different people have different cultural characteristics thus a manager needs to learn them in order to deal effectively with a diverse workforce. Hofstede classified countries according to the culture dimensions and put them into various categories such as – power distance, collectivism vs. individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity vs. femininity, long term vs. short-term orientation and indulgence vs. constraint (Meads Andrews, 2009). People under these dimensions behave , communicate and have different expectations. It is imperative that a manger learns the differences to manage his or her team smoothly. The manager must learn to treat workers uniquely because the approach of â€Å"one size fits all† will not help in managing a diverse workforce (Mor Barak, 2000. p. 347). The manager must come up with strategies that work for his or her particular team and not rely on those that have always worked in the past. Difficulties of a managing a diverse team Conversely, difficulties arise when dealing with a diverse workforce. For instance, miscommunication. Miscommunication is a major difficulty which may arise when people speak different languages or when they make different interpretations of communication. It might also be difficult to reach an agreement when people have different points of views and thus decision-making may take a long time. Workers may fear and resist the change brought about by diversity (Chevrier, 2003). Ethical leadership concepts in cross cultural management A successful company requires ethical leadership. A leader who practices the concepts of ethical leadership is bound to lead an organization to success. Through ethical communication, a manager should set standards of truth when dealing with diverse employees. The employees should always be truthful with the manager and him or her with them. A leader must ensure that quality is maintained in all aspects of the business and the employees will strive to maintain quality. Moreover, leaders must practice ethical collaboration by ensuring they seek advice from people who are qualified to give trustworthy advice on the matters of the company. A leader must plan for succession by identifying employees with potential to lead.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Cultural diversity specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is important to prepare them for their future role in leadership. A l eader should select an employee from the pool of workers regardless of their backgrounds to give every employee a fair chance in the company. Lastly, a leader should not hold on to power in an organization and should give other employees a chance to lead the organization too. References Bhadury, J., Mighty, E.J. Damar, H. 2000. How to Grow Salt Crystals

How to Grow Salt Crystals Table salt, also known as sodium chloride, is a crystal (a symmetrical solid substance made entirely of the same material).  You can see the shape of a salt crystal under a microscope, and you can grow your own salt crystals for fun or for a science fair. Growing salt crystals is fun and easy; the ingredients are right in your kitchen, the crystals are non-toxic, and no special equipment is required.   How to Grow Salt Crystals It takes very little work to start the process of growing salt crystals, though you will need to wait a few hours or days to see the results, depending on the method you use. No matter which method you try, youll need to use a hot stove and boiling water, so adult supervision is advised.   Salt Crystal Materials table salt (sodium chloride)waterclean clear containera piece of cardboard (optional)string and pencil or butter knife (optional) Procedures Stir salt into boiling hot water until no more salt will dissolve (crystals start to appear at the bottom of the container). Be sure the water is as close to boiling as possible. Hot tap water is not sufficient for making the solution. Quick Crystals:  If you want crystals quickly, you can soak a piece of cardboard in this supersaturated salt solution. Once it is soggy, place it on a plate or pan and set it in a warm and sunny location to dry out. Numerous small salt crystals will form. Perfect Crystals:  If you are trying to form a larger, perfect cubic crystal, you will want to make a seed crystal.  To grow a big crystal from a seed crystal, carefully pour the supersaturated salt solution into a clean container (so no undissolved salt gets in), allow the solution to cool, then hang the seed crystal in the solution from a pencil or knife placed across the top of the container. You could cover the container with a coffee filter if you like. Set the container in a location where it can remain undisturbed. You are more likely to get a perfect crystal instead of a mass of crystals if you allow the crystal to grow slowly (cooler temperature, shaded location) in a place free of vibrations. Tips for Success Experiment with different types of table salt. Try iodized salt, un-iodized salt, sea salt, or even salt substitutes. Try using different types of water, such as tap water compared with distilled water. See if there is any difference in the appearance of the crystals. If you are trying for the perfect crystal use un-iodized salt and distilled water. Impurities in either the salt or water can aid dislocation, where new crystals dont stack perfectly on top of previous crystals. The solubility of table salt (or any kind of salt) increases greatly with temperature. Youll get the quickest results if you start with a saturated saline solution, which means you want to dissolve salt in the hottest water available. One trick to increase the amount of salt you can dissolve is to microwave the salt solution. Stir in more salt until it stops dissolving and starts to accumulate at the bottom of the container. Use the clear liquid to grow your crystals. You can filter out the solids using a coffee f ilter or paper towel.

Consumer Behavior and the Marketing Manager Personal Statement

Consumer Behavior and the Marketing Manager - Personal Statement Example This is called marketing mix in which the business focuses on the price, promotion, product and place. This further brings in the concept of market segmentation which is dividing the market into segments according to the preferences of the consumers. Different people have different interests over products; segmentation helps the businesses to focus on the consumers’ wants individually, makes them aware of what kind of products are in demand so that they can stock them and sell more. The internet is one of the most basic tools being used for advertising goods and this is mostly because it is far reaching and does not cost as much. Considering the great amount of people who are using the internet these days, even shopping online, the businesses prefer this means of marketing. Whenever one goes online on any social media site, a new brand name of some company pops up, show casing their line of products and it just so easy and convenient for one to look into it and maybe order it if one likes it. Similarly, there can be other ways of advertising like billboards at places which are most visited or television advertisements between shows which are most

Demonstration Presentation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Demonstration Presentation - Essay Example During my presentation am going to talk about the history of animation, types, and demonstrate how they can be designed using basic equipments. I will also elaborate on how one can benefit from the different animation designs. 1. Based on â€Å"historical dictionary of animation and cartoon† by Nichola Dobson, he mentioned that the invention of animation designs is attributed to Etienne Gaspard. This was first discovered in 1798 when he projected moving images using â€Å"Magic Lanteren†. 2. However the first animation graphic design to be produced to the public was in 1908. It was in the form of stop motion produced by a French film maker named Èmile Cohl’s with title â€Å"fantasmagorie† = â€Å"phantasmagoria† 4. During those days there were different types of animation designs. At this juncture I would kindly request all of you to be attentive as I mention some the designs. They include: 2D †¦ â€Å"2D, 3D, stop motion, and Sculpture. A. Since last year, I have been using my hobby of designing animations to get some benefits. I started by drawing free animation designs in the youth magazine until I became a member in animation
